Why do commercial soaps use SLS & Paraben ?

SLS is acronym for Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and is widely used in soap bars because it enables the soap bars to produce good amount of foam. Additionally, this chemical comes at a cheap cost. So, this is the reason mainly why our commercial soaps still have these.

Paraben is used to prevent the soap bars from deteriorating due to growth of bacteria, fungus, mold or other micro-organisms. Having said this, we should note that Paraben is harmful for skin. It may also get absorbed in skin and can cause hormonal disorders. It is really unhealthy for our skin and our body.

More often, consumers do not read this on the label while using such products.  They kind of turn a blind eye to it. Even though they know the presence of such harmful chemicals in the product. This is mostly because of the popularity of the brands promoting such soap bars.

An exercise to check the same will just take a minute. Next time, whenever you are using a commercial soap or shampoo, just turn the box and read the ingredients printed on the label. You will be surprised to read about the never ending list of chemical present in fine print. As an interactive exercise, we urge you all to post the list of all the chemicals in your soap bars in the comments section. And, we will surprise a selected few with our soap bars. 🙂
